If you are planning to travel to the US Virgin Islands, there are several things you need to be aware of as you plan your trip. A little preparation will help ensure you have a wonderful visit that is full of amazing experiences and memories.
Passport
While you will not need a passport to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, a passport is required to travel via boat trip to any number of nearby islands in the British Virgin Islands. If you do not have a passport, you must have a certified copy, which means one with a raised seal, of your birth certificate to prove where your citizenship is. A government-issued photo ID will also be needed if you use a birth certificate. Anyone who is not a citizen of the United States will have to have a passport from the country where they are citizens. Before you leave, visit the U.S. Customs office in Cruz Bay to help you determine what you need if you are not sure.
Currency
Because the Virgin Islands are United States territories, the U.S. dollar is the accepted currency. Most places accept travelers checks and credit cards. Visa and MasterCard are the desired credit cards and ATMs are available throughout the islands.
Weather
The Virgin Islands do not experience seasons as much of the United States does. The Virgin Islands weather is nearly perfect all year with an average temperature in the upper 70’s to low 80’s all year with mostly sunny days.
Pets
Pets are always welcome to visit the Virgin Islands, but be sure to check with your hotel to see if they are allowed. There are no quarantine restrictions, but you will have to have a certificate from your veterinarian stating that all shots are up to date. These certificates are only good for thirty days, so if you plan to stay longer than that, you should plan to visit one of our local vets for a certificate to travel home.
Electronics
Internet, television, and cell phone services are available. When you travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, you will easily be able to keep up with all world news and friends and family back home. Standard 120 volt current is used so you will not need a special adaptor for your electronics. It is illegal to drive while using your cell phone, so be sure to bring an ear piece if you will be driving while here. You will periodically pick up the cell towers in the British Virgin Islands, particularly on the North Shore and Eastern ends of the island. Be sure to turn off roaming features on your phone and messaging or you will incur costs and have to contact your cell provider to contest the charges.
Miscellaneous Information
If you will be driving in the Virgin Islands, be aware that it is done on the left side of the road. You will be in the Atlantic Time Zone (the same time as the East Coast during the spring and summer months, an hour ahead during the fall and winter) and English is the official language of the islands. There are many wonderful medical facilities on the Virgin Islands and emergencies are transferred by medical boat to St. Thomas.
